Sanding
Methods
THE BASIC METHOD SANDING/SEALING PINE BOARDS
STEP 1
The floor is cleared of all remaining carpet and gripper rods and
at this point we carry out any repairs or replacements to the floor.
STEP 2
Once the repairs are done we then go across the floor taking out
any nails or staples which are sticking out and bang down any loose
boards.
STEP 3
The dust free sanding machines are then brought out and our team
start sanding the floor down through the grades starting with a
cores 24 grit belt taking out any cupping of the boards and levelling
the entire floor. This process continues through the grades 40,
60 and then 80.
STEP 4
Now edging around the floor begins, starting with 24 grit leading
up to 80 grit the same as the main floor
STEP 5
Now using the saw dust from the 80 grit sand we mix it with apoxy
resin to make up a filler matched to your floor to fill any minor
gaps, cracks or holes etc .
Optionally, we can fill all the gaps in the floor boards up to 6mm
using this method. Anything over 6mm we can fill using other methods
and as a last resort we can re-align the boards and put in a reclaimed
board to take up the slack.
STEP 6
Once the filler is dry we sand the floor and edges using 100 grit
to sand and remove any filler. Finally, using 120 grit, we sand
the floor and edges to a smooth finish. We then sand down the corners
to 120 finish using a corner sander. When all of this is done we
give the floor and surrounding areas a good vacuum at least twice.
STEP 7 (optional)
IF REQUIRED THE FLOOR CAN BE STAINED. WORKING ALONG TWO BOARDS AT
A TIME, STAIN IS APPLIED WITH A CLOTH OR A BRUSH UNTIL THE FLOOR
IS COMPLETELY COVERED, OR WE USE A BUFFER MACHINE, DEPENDING ON
THE SIZE OF THE ROOM. THE STAIN TAKES ABOUT 30-60 MINUTES TO DRY
BEFORE THE FIRST COAT OF SEAL CAN BE APPLIED.
STEP 8
Lacquer is applied with a short haired roller, 1 coat at a time
for 3 coats. After the first coat the floor may need lightly sanding
with a finishing sander due to grain raise . Once the final coat
is applied the floor can have light traffic after 2-3 hours. Furniture
can go back after 12-24 hours. We will advise you .
